As found on earlier Pre devices, the Pre 3 features a dedicated area for use with navigation gestures. Sensors like an accelerometer and electronic compass will help with functions like gaming and navigation, and a built-in proximity sensor ensures that the touchscreen is disabled when the Pre 3 is being used for a call.

This newest member of the Pre family sports a 1.4GHz Qualcomm processor, which should ensure that it has plenty of computing power. Naturally is also has built-in GPS support and a 5 megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording capability. 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 2.1 are also on-board, and the Wi-Fi can be used for sharing 3G data in hotspot mode.

The HP Pre 3 comes with 512MB of application RAM and will come in versions with 8GB or 16GB of built-in storage space. Other hardware items of note include a micro-USB charging and data port and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The phone weighs 156g (5.5oz) and measures 111mm x 64mm x 16mm (4.4in x 2.5in x .6in) in size.

The Pre 3 will be available in both HSPA+ and EV-DO Rev A versions, and is expected to hit the market this summer.

The Veer is just as tall as a credit card and measures a small 54.5mm x 84.0mm x 15.1mm (2.1in x 3.3in x 0.6in). Despite it’s small size, it still has a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

The Veer is the first smartphone to run Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800MHz 7230 processor. It has a 2.57-inch display with a 400 x 320 pixel resolution. It’s equipped with 802.11b/g Wi-Fi connectivity, as well as Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR. It has HSPA+ connectivity which means we may see this pop up onAT&T or T-Mobile as a “4G” device.

The Veer will come with 8GB of internal storage, but there’s no mention of a microSD card slot for adding additional storage. It also has a relatively small 910mAh battery, but HP Palm didn’t provide battery life figures.

The Veer is expected to be available this Spring, although carriers and potential pricing were not announced

The Pre Plus measures 100.5mm x 59.5mm x 17mm (2.3in x 3.9in x 0.7in) and runs Palm’s proprietary webOS operating system which focuses on Palm’s Synergy concept. Synergy is a seamless way to sync calendars, contacts, and e-mail accounts between your computer and your webOS device.

Perhaps the most unique feature of the Palm Pre Plus is its 3G Mobile HotSpot feature, which allows you to share your 3G connection with up to five WiFi capable devices, much like you would with a MiFi device.

The Palm Pre Plus has a slider-keyboard form factor, and supports Verizon Wireless’ EV-DO Rev. A 3G network. It’s also equipped with WiFi, 16GB of storage, aGPS, a 3.1-inch 480 x 320 multi-touch display, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Physical Aspects

The lightweight and pocketable Pixi measures 111mm x 55mm x 11mm (2.2in x 4.4in x .4in) in size. At 92.5g (3.3oz), it feels very light, albeit sturdy, in the hand and can easily slide into pockets of even the skinniest of jeans. It has a 2.6-inch 400 x 320 pixel resolution capacitive touch screen display that’s easy to view even in direct sunlight.

The Pixi comes with a standard lightweight plastic back cover that can be swapped out with one of a series of artistic design covers or a dimpled and rubbery Touchstone inductive charging compatible cover. Popping off the back cover is frustrating, to say the least. We had to ease our fingernail around the phone’s rear panel to loosen it up and take it off.

The micro-USB charging port, volume keys, and power button all lay flush with the phone. The micro-USB port is covered by a small rubber hatch that is difficult to open. A “ringer switch” along the right side provides a way to silence all notifications, including call and message ringtones. The two volume buttons are on the right side of the phone. They are fairly large, but require a bit of force to use. There’s a 3.5mm headphone jack next to the power button on the top of the Pixi.

While some users were dissatisfied with the keyboard on the Palm Pre, most specifically because of the close proximity of the top row of keys to the bottom of the Pre’s slider, the Pixi is fairly easy to type on. It sports a full QWERTY keyboard with hard rubber buttons that are similar to those found on the Palm Centro. I found the keyboard took some getting used to because the keys were so close together that it took deliberate tapping at first. The buttons were also fairly loud and rather chintzy feeling.

There’s a finger swipe gesture area found between the display and the keyboard, and while it offers the same gestures that the Palm Pre uses, the Pre’s glowing orb is nowhere to be found on the Pixi.

So should you buy the Pixi now? Why not wait a while as I am sure the phone will be available for free on contract real soon. After all there are hotter phones out there worth purchasing with new contracts like the HTC Hero, the Motorola Droid, the BlackBerry Storm2, the HTC Droid Eris or the Samsung Behold II.
