It looks fantastic – with a 4.3 inch qHD Super AMOLED display, covered in Gorilla Glass and mounted on a very slim and lightweight Kevlar-infused body, which is just 7.1mm thick. Powered by an OMAP 4430 chipset, the handset features a speedy 1.2GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 processor. It also houses a more than substantial 8 megapixel camera, capable of 1080p video recording. Battery-life is all too often a let down on a smartphone, however Motorola insists that this device promises 12.5 hours of talk time and 8.9 hours of video playback, thanks to the large 1800mAh battery.

The Motorola Defy is virtually unique, as it is full smartphone, which runs on Android 2.1 and is also waterproof and dust and scratch-resistant. While there have been tough phones which can resist the elements, before (such as the Sonim range), the Motorola Defy is among the first smartphones that could be described in the same way. And that makes the Motorola Defy an intriguing phone; however, can it be as good as that initial intrigue suggests?

Design – 8/10

The problem with some tough phones is that they look ugly, but what is particularly nice about the Motorola Defy is that, despite being designed as a waterproof phone, there is very little in the design that shows that. Other than a couple of exposed screws, and the battery lock cover, the Motorola Defy looks just like an everyday smartphone; that is to say, the Motorola Defy looks good, and it has to get extra marks for not looking like a tough phone!

Operating System – 9/10

The Motorola Defy uses Android 2.1, and as Android is one of the most powerful operating systems on the market, there are no worries in the software department. However, the Motorola Defy also gets extra marks for including Motorola’s MOTOBLUR interface, optimised for social networking (more on that in a second). Of course, with access to the Android Market, the Motorola Defy can also be customised with new apps, and so, there is almost nothing to find fault with, here.

Hardware – 10/10

The Motorola Defy may not have the fastest processor in the world (although it does run at 800MHz, which is not slow), but that is not enough to knock any marks off. This is because what sets the Motorola Defy apart is the fact that its body is waterproof; that is a brilliant feature. The mere concept of a smartphone one could even use underwater is too impressive not to give the Motorola Defy full marks for hardware!

Camera and media – 9/10

The Motorola Defy includes a 5MP camera, which has more or less become the industry standard for smartphones. Android also brings media features to the Motorola Defy, including the ubiquitous Youtube app. However, the Motorola Defy has to get extra marks for being the first phone that could be used (as an example), if one so desired, to take photos of your fish-tank, from inside the tank. That is impressive, to say the least!

Screen – 9/10

At 3.7 inches, with a resolution of 480×854 pixels, the Motorola Defy is more or less the same as the Motorola Milestone 2. Therefore, the Motorola Defy also has the same aspect ratio as that phone, making it close enough to be 16:9 widescreen. The screen is also made of scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass, which is a particularly important feature in a tough phone. Put simply, the Motorola Defy’s screen is both tough and beautiful.

Social – 9/10

With Motorola’s MOTOBLUR interface installed, the Motorola Defy is a seriously social smartphone; things like Facebook or Twitter feeds are front and centre on the device, and things like friends’ statuses are updated in real-time. As with the earlier DEXT, the Motorola Defy is a truly social beast.

Overall – 9/10

The Motorola Defy is a somewhat unique proposition in the world of smartphones. If it were a normal, traditional smartphone, it would be a good phone. It is reasonably powerful, if not the most powerful phone in the world, with good looks and great features. However, when you also factor in that the Motorola Defy is completely waterproof down to a depth of 1.5m, it goes from being a goodphone to being a downright brilliant phone. Because of that, because it merges the world of smartphones and tough phones so seamlessly, the Motorola Defy comes highly recommended.

Design – 9/10

The first key point to note, with the Motorola Milestone 2, is how surprisingly slim it is, for a phone with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. In fact, the best way to describe the Motorola Milestone 2 is to say that they took the original Milestone, then made it shinier and a lot prettier. As such, the Motorola Milestone 2 may be one of the nicest QWERTY phones on the market.

Operating System – 10/10

The Motorola Milestone 2 uses Android 2.2, also known as Froyo, and it’s this operating system that makes it such a powerhouse. However, it’s tied in with Motorola’s custom MOTOBLUR UI, and in the past, this has led to some issues with phones slowing down; there are no such issues with the Motorola Milestone 2, thanks to its new 1GHz processor, which allows MOTOBLUR to live up to its full potential. You can get access to the huge Android App Market and all of Google’s services such as Gmail, Google search and Google Maps. The platform also supports Adobe Flash 10.1, multi-tasking and better Wi-Fi capabilities. The Motorola Milestone 2 also includes the Swype keyboard as standard which, as far as this reviewer is concerned, means it gets a perfect ten, simply for that.

Hardware – 10/10

The Motorola Milestone 2 has very good hardware, from the new 1GHz processor, through the various connectivity options (including WiFi), to the 8GB of internal storage. However, one fact stands out above all the others; the manufacturer has given the Motorola Milestone 2 a full QWERTY keyboard, while simultaneously keeping it remarkably thin. That alone is an astonishing achievement.

Camera and media – 9/10

The Motorola Milestone 2 includes a five-megapixel camera, capable of capturing 720p HD Video, but there is more to its media features than just the camera. For starters, the Motorola Milestone 2 includes Google’s Youtube app, as part of Android 2.2, and that alone makes it a great media phone. Because you can also add memory cards up to 32GB, the Motorola Milestone 2 can be upped to a total of 40GB of storage, making it perfect for mobile multimedia.

Screen – 9/10

The Motorola Milestone 2 is unusual in that it features a non-standard screen resolution, coming in at 480×854 pixels. However, there is a reason for this: that makes it almost a 16:9 widescreen, of the kind used for widescreen movies in the cinema. Thus, the Motorola Milestone 2′s screen is perfect for watching movies on.

Social – 10/10

This is where the Motorola Milestone 2′s interface, MOTOBLUR, really comes into its own, as it is designed expressly for the purpose of putting your social features front and centre on the device. From Facebook feeds to Twitter updates, the Motorola Milestone 2 is built to excel at social networking, and excel it does.

Overall – 9/10

The Motorola Milestone 2 had a tough act to follow, coming after the original Milestone, but it hasn’t just lived up to its predecessor; it’s blown its predecessor, and a sizeable chunk of the current Android range, out of the water! The Motorola Milestone 2 really is an incredible phone, that really shows off what Android is capable of, and thus, it comes highly recommended.

Summary

While not offering a huge, high-resolution display like some other higher-end Android smartphones, the Motorola DROID Pro for Verizon Wireless sets itself apart with its form factor and its ability to work not only on Verizon’s CDMA based network in the U.S., but to also roam onto GSM and UMTS 3G networks world wide.

What the DROID Pro might lack in the “ooh la la” sex appeal department, it more than makes up for when it comes time to get some serious work done. No Android device is likely as efficient as the DROID Pro when it comes to messaging tasks and ease of use for a business user. The keyboard, which is always available, virtually ensures that.

But the phone is not without problems, such as inconsistent performance when it comes to call audio quality. But the phone’s reception seems strong, and the phone can even be used as a 3G Wi-Fi hotspot, which is another thing business users will like. In the end, it is a really good device with one or two issues.

From a hardware perspective, the Motorola DROID Pro is quite unlike most other Android smartphone. While many will refer to its design as “BlackBerry-like,” the fact that its display is oriented vertically distinguishes it from most other smartphones on the market, Android-based or not.

The 3.1-inch HVGA (320 x 480 pixel) display that the DROID Pro features is nothing particularly special. It is neither large not particularly high-res, but it is more than sufficient for the task at hand, and anything larger would likely make the device unwieldy. The fact that the 4-row QWERTY keyboard sits so low on the device can already make it somewhat of a handful to use, but that can be overcome with a bit of time.

The keyboard itself is laid out well, with dedicated keys for frequently used punctuation marks, such as the period (full stop), comma, and ‘@’ symbol. The keys offer a nice click when pressed, but are perhaps a bit slick. A matte finish would have worked a bit better, in my opinion, and the same could be said for the slick, glossy rear cover of the phone.

That cover wraps around the 5 megapixel camera and dual-LED flash. It must be removed to gain access to the 1,390mAh battery, the microSD memory card slot (2GB card included with roughly 1GB of storage built-in), and the SIM card that allows it to roam onto GSM and UMTS networks around the world. The right edge of the phone features a shortcut key (defaults to the Calendar) and has no camera shutter button. The volume rocker and micro-USB port are on the left edge, while the power button and 3.5mm headphone jack are located up top.

The design of the DROID Pro is very practical and usable, but is not exactly sexy. I’d have opted for a soft-touch surface on the back of the phone, but otherwise feel Motorola was mostly on the mark. It measures 119 x 61 x 11.7mm (4.7 x 2.4 x .5in) in size, which is long, but pocketable, and weighs 134g (4.7oz).

Verizon Wireless has announced the newest addition to its DROID portfolio, the Motorola DROID BIONIC. The new smartphone packs quite a punch with a speedy dual-core processor and 4G LTE support.

Featuring a a super fast, dual-core processor with up to 2GHz of total processing power, the BIONIC will offer users a quick and smooth user experience when navigating through its Android 2.2 operating system’s screens. The device supports Verizon Wireless’ new 4G LTE network for data throughput speeds that are expected to be up to 10x faster than Verizon’s current 3G network. The BIONIC offers an 8 megapixel camera for video and photos as well as a VGA forward-facing camera for video chatting on the smartphone’s massive 4.3-inch qHD (quarter high definition) touchscreen display.

Other features include HTML5 web browsing, Adobe Flash Player support, HDMI connectivity, and Bluetooth. The Motorola DROID BIONIC is expected to be available in the early second quarter of 2011 with Verizon Wireless.

Motorola today has announced a refresh of its popular CLIQ Android smartphone, aptly named the CLIQ 2. The new 3G/4G device sports a large 3.7-inch touchscreen display as well as full slide-out QWERTY keyboard for easy text input.

The CLIQ 2 offers top-of-the-line performance, functionality, and features that include support for T-Mobile’s 3G/4G network, a next-generation 1GHz processor, built-in GPS and Wi-Fi, and a 5MP camera with video recording abilities. Powered by Google’s Android 2.2 operating system, users can enjoy built-in features such as Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail, and YouTube.

The handset also supports Motorola’s own MOTOBLUR user interface for managing social networking services on-the-go, as well offering 3G mobile hotspot support, DLNA, and WiFi calling. The Motorola CLIQ 2 will be available exclusively for T-Mobile USA starting January 19, 2011 online and in stores. Pricing has yet to be announced.

Today during the AT&T press event at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Motorola Mobility CEO Sanjay Jha announced the company’s latest 4G handset, the Motorola ATRIX 4G.

The ATRIX 4G features a dual-core processor with each core running at 1GHz, and displays everything on a 4-inch qHD touchscreen display. 4G data speeds are provided by the phone’s support for AT&T’s HSPA+^(INFO) network.

Available as an accessory for the ATRIX is the Motorola laptop dock, which offers users a large display and keyboard for doing work while letting the Android powered ATRIX’s processor do the heavy lifting. An HD media dock accessory will also be available for the ATRIX 4G.

One of the cooler features of the ATRIX is that includes both the standard Android 2.2 Froyo web browser for normal browsing as well as a full tabbed version of the Firefox web browser while running in “webtop” mode with the laptop dock. A 5 megapixel camera and a VGA resolution front facing camera for video chatting are also on-board. The ATRIX 4G includes 16GB of internal storage and can support microSD expansion cards as large as 32GB in size.

All of this technology takes some power, though, so the Motorola ATRIX 4G is equipped with a massive 1930mAh battery that makes it good for up to 9 hours of talk time. The phone weighs 136g (4.8oz) and measures 117mm x 63.5mm x 10mm (4.6in x 2.5in × 0.4in) in size.

The Motorola ATRIX 45 is expected to go on sale during the first quarter of 2011.

Today Sprint announced the Motorola i886, a QWERTY iDEN phone with support for the Nextel Direct Connect push-to-talk service.

The Motorola i886 meets Military spec 810G ratings for dust, shock, vibration, low and high temperature, low pressure, and solar radiation exposure. It offers a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 2MP camera with a camcorder function, an MP3 player, GPS, and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR. The i886 comes with a 2GB microSD card and users can upgrade that to a 32GB microSD card.

The Motorola i886 is available from Sprint for $79.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and with a new two year service agreement.
